I Answer any two questions not exceeding three pages each

1.Within the kaleidoscopic patterns of life in India-social, religious, political, economic-
    many shades of opinion  exist regarding  the position of English. Explain how this
    has affected the  teaching of English.

2.Some believe that grammar is the framework of language and  that a reasonable  degree
     of accuracy  is impossible to achieve unless the student  has a good grounding. Do you
     agree? Answer with reference to the level of competence in grammar seen in pupils at
     the Secondary level.

3. Communicative Language Teaching Approach,  cannot be called a method  as it
     incorporates a variety of ways for facilitating  the acquisition of  language as a means
     of communication. Illustrate.

4. The aim of Behaviourist teaching  is to form new, correct linguistic habits through
     intensive practice, eliminating interference of errors  in the process [Crystal 1987].
     Illustrate.

5.Comment on the content included  in  ‘Extensive Reading’ which replaced
    ‘Supplementary Reader’ in the new Course Book.

9. Illustrate any four ways of teaching vocabulary.
10. Write short notes on functions in English (Communicative Approach).
11. How is teaching Prose different from teaching Poetry?
12. Write short notes on Total Physical Response.
13. Write short notes on Krashen’s contribution to teaching a language.
14. Illustrate how the mother tongue can be used  with discretion in the English
     class room.
